A Room Full of Opportunities
In the fall and the spring semesters, companies from a number of industries come to the W. P. Carey School to meet MBA students looking for a summer internship or full-time employment. Last night, representatives and hiring managers from Deloitte, Charles Schwab, Intel, CVS, and many others joined us at Company Networking Night (CNN).
CNN gives MBA students a chance to meet with all of these companies, find out what they are looking for in a candidate, and maybe lay a foundation for future conversations about a position within their organization. CNN also lets Full-time MBA students like me catch up with our fellow W. P. Carey MBA students from the Evening and Online programs. Because we’re all busy with our own classes and working within our own teams, our schedules don’t overlap too much, and this is a really great opportunity to find out other peoples’ MBA stories.
But you can’t just grab your resume, throw on a tie, and show up at an event like CNN: The Graduate Career Center (GCC) at W.P. Carey does an amazing job preparing all of us for networking events like this. When I first arrived in Tempe, I worked closely with the GCC to put together an improved resume and my elevator pitch. And as Company Networking Night draws closer every year, the GCC develops a mock CNN, which allows all the students to practice and receive feedback in a formal networking setting. It may sound easy, but not everyone is comfortable at networking events and the additional practice makes a tremendous difference.
Unlike most career fairs you may have attended, a strong performance at CNN can result in many promising job leads, so it’s so important to come in confident and rehearsed. And it’s crucial to have the support of the staff at the GCC, who works so closely with the companies in attendance and helps us through the process.
