The value of getting involved

One of the greatest pieces of advice that I received before starting college is to “get involved.” I heard that from so many people, so I figured that it would be beneficial to take their advice and get involved. What people mean by this is to join student organizations and eventually take on leadership roles.

There are more than 45 business clubs and organizations at the W. P. Carey School. After joining and becoming a part of two executive boards for different clubs, I now make sure that everyone understands the value of getting involved as a W. P. Carey student.

Although I am a business communication major, I have always been interested in marketing. So the first semester of my first year, I joined the American Marketing Association (AMA) to learn more about marketing. At the first meeting of the year, they mentioned that they were still looking for a VP of Philanthropy. Because I love doing community service, I decided to run for the position, which was surprisingly quite nerve-racking!

I went up against three other nominees and I had never run for a position like that before. With the position I have helped bring awareness to philanthropy, and coordinated several events with AMA members to help out at St. Mary’s Food Bank and Feed My Starving Children. Next month we are planning on going to St. Vincent de Paul to help make pizzas for the homeless.

Because my major is business communication, it seemed quite reasonable to join the Business Communication Student Association (BCSA) during my second semester at ASU. They were offering a marketing committee when I first joined, and I was super excited to get more hands-on experience with marketing.

With that committee, I wrote several blog posts for the club throughout the semester, and eventually became the VP of Marketing for this academic year. With that position I run the marketing committee, plan social media content, and email members and non-members to help them find out more about BCSA.

Overall, both of these student organizations have helped me learn more about working with a team, while also teaching me that I need to be more outspoken with ideas in order to make things better. Getting involved with clubs is super rewarding, and teaches you more than you could possibly learn in a classroom. If a W. P. Carey student is just trying to get good grades or just pass their classes, then I think that they are only getting half the education available to them at the W. P. Carey School.
