Just as many classes, events, and even happy hours are moving to virtual formats, W. P. Carey is transitioning to virtual career events this fall. The good news is that virtual recruiting has been around for years, and we have designed some great resources to ensure our students can be successful in that format! Here’s more info on what to expect and how you can prepare for virtual career events that are happening through the month of September. Be sure to review the preparation materials and resources sent by your career coach prior to the events.

What can you expect at a virtual career event?
Despite the different physical setting, virtual open houses, industry days, and workshops are surprisingly like in-person events. One difference is that you will need to sign up to save your spot ahead of time. You can see all available events in Handshake and register online. Some events are large group sessions where employers present and offer Q&A. Other options are one-on-one sessions where you can meet with a recruiter. On the day and time of the event, you join through the Handshake portal. Make sure you are dressed for an in-person event because you will be on camera. It’s always a good idea to check your tech ahead of time, too.

Getting yourself prepared is a great way to feel confident and empowered to join in the conversation with employers. During the employer presentations, you can ask questions that deepen your knowledge about current issues in the field or get clarification about an industry. It’s also a way for you to stand out. Joey Kimes, senior assistant director of career management, shares this tip with MBA students. “These interactions are a great way for you to stand out and show your leadership and critical thinking skills. Engage in the conversation thoughtfully and show true interest in both the company and other candidates.” Signing up for one-on-one sessions with recruiters will give you the opportunity to build rapport and showcase your qualifications for the roles that are available.

How do you share your resume with the employer?
Virtually! Make sure you have updated your resume in Handshake and set to “visible” so employers can see it. This is a critical way to ensure employers can see the great talent we have here and to ensure they can find you! Plus, as part of your preparation, make sure you have a printed copy for yourself to reference during any conversations. Following up after the event by sending a LinkedIn request will showcase your continued interest and help you stay connected.

How can you make a connection online?
We know that sometimes it can feel uncomfortable conversing virtually, but it is still possible to make a connection and be remembered. The most important thing here is to prepare, the same way you would for an in-person networking event. Know what interests you about the different companies and positions. Have questions in advance. Truly engage with the recruiter and show you’ve done your research! This will help you form a positive impression no matter the format.

You can also use the virtual format to your advantage. For example, you can think carefully about questions for an industry panel and re-word them for clarity. Make sure to proofread anything in the chat box before hitting send.

What is proper etiquette for virtual career events?
Mostly the same as in-person. Margaret Jarvis, associate director of career management, explains “Your interaction with potential employers should still indicate the highest level of professionalism. Wear a suit or other professional attire, refrain from sending emojis or using texting acronyms, and send a thank you note after talking to a prospective employer.” If you have questions about how to engage, check out the recruiting drop-in hours scheduled in Handshake or set up an appointment with your career coach.

How can you sign up for a virtual career event?
It’s important to register for all career events ahead of time in Handshake. This helps you prepare, and lets employers know who to expect at the event. The virtual platform allows employers to have visibility into who signed up, which means it is equally important that you attend all events you register for.

While virtual events might not be the way you were expecting to network with potential employers, they are a valuable resource as you embark on your job search. Feel free to reach out to Career Management and Employer Engagement with any questions or for help preparing.
