If you’re applying for the W. P. Carey Full-time MBA program — or if you want to add an extra punch to your specialized master’s program application — preparing for the GMAT or GRE is an important step that requires some effort. To make sure you’re as ready as possible, consider the following tips for success.
Study, study, study
This may seem obvious, but it’s also the most important step. By utilizing all the test prep services and practice tests available, you can go into the test without worrying about any surprises popping up. According to GMAC, the administrator of the GMAT exam, nearly half of test-takers spend around 50 hours studying, and fewer than a quarter spend less than 20 hours on prep work. GMAC also found that more hours spent on preparing correlated to higher test scores. Set up a schedule with time every day or every week to familiarize yourself with the material and be prepared come test day.
Show your work
When working through the questions, especially math-related questions, having the problem and your work written down can be very beneficial. Seeing everything written out can help you keep track of your process and spot any mistakes that need correcting.
Remember to keep calm
It’s easy to get caught up in test-taking anxiety and rush to get done as soon as possible. But speeding through the exam isn’t the best strategy. Take your time to answer as many questions as you can the best you can. During practice tests, develop a strategy to focus on your strengths and learn to pace yourself so that, even in the moment, you’ll be able to stay calm and focused.
Stay on track
Planning will be your best friend during the test prep process. Develop a strategy and schedule that fits your life and style of learning to help you best succeed. Give yourself enough time so that you will feel prepared, confident, and relaxed heading into test day.
The bottom line
Earning an MBA or business master's degree is one of the best ways to move your career forward, but how it fits into your life is just as important as what it can do for you down the road.
