As a finance professional and an entrepreneur, Priyanka Modi (MS-FIN '25) made the choice to pursue a master's degree to further develop her technical skills while expanding her network and career opportunities.

This led her to the W. P. Carey School of Business and its Master of Science in Finance (MS-FIN) degree program, which offers an innovative curriculum with many opportunities to gain real-world finance industry experience. The school's large alumni network was also appealing to her.

"I decided to pursue a graduate degree at W. P. Carey because of its rigorous and relevant MS- FIN program, which focuses on applying financial concepts to real-world challenges, preparing students for the dynamic financial landscape," says Modi. "Moreover, the school’s diverse and inclusive community appealed to me, as it fosters collaboration and innovation in a global setting."

"Ultimately, I chose W. P. Carey because it offers not only the technical expertise in finance but also the leadership skills and global perspective needed to create a meaningful impact in the field," says Modi.

W. P. Carey spoke with Modi about her path to the MS-FIN program, how she's connected with classmates, and her plans after graduation.

Why W. P. Carey?

Modi came to W. P. Carey with an educational and work background in finance, as well as the experience of founding her own company. But the desire to expand her knowledge of finance even further while tapping into the school's vast network led her to pursue further education.

From the beginning, she was impressed by the MS-FIN curriculum, which is designed to put students in realistic financial situations that give them learning opportunities far beyond the traditional classroom experience.

"The MS-FIN program's emphasis on solving real-world financial challenges has been particularly impactful," says Modi. "Through hands-on projects, case studies, and access to industry-standard tools, I’ve gained valuable insights that bridge the gap between theory and practice."

One experience that has been particularly impactful thus far for Modi has been working with the Charles Schwab Foundation Financial Access and Research (FAR) Lab. As one of many research centers and labs available at W. P. Carey, it was established as a place for finance students to gain experience working with different tools.

"The presence of the FAR Lab on campus has been a game-changer in my educational experience," says Modi. "Being able to work with cutting-edge financial tools and technologies that professionals use daily has brought the concepts we learn in class to life."

While taking advantage of the resources available at W. P. Carey and in the MS-FIN program, Modi has also been building a network of personal connections, thanks to the school's strong community. "Connections with ASU classmates and faculty have had a profound impact on my learning and personal growth," says Modi. "Collaborating with classmates from diverse cultural, academic, and professional backgrounds has been incredibly enriching."

"Faculty at W. P. Carey have also played a pivotal role in my growth. Beyond being experts in their fields, they are genuinely invested in the success of their students. Their approachability and mentorship have been invaluable, whether it’s through providing career guidance, sharing real-world insights, or encouraging critical thinking."

Why finance?

Modi has long had a passion for finance, as shown through her bachelor's degree in the field, as well as her work experience. She's held finance-related positions at multiple transportation companies in India. She has also gotten a taste for entrepreneurship. She founded Modi Freight Carrier, which operated within the cement industry with a fleet of over 40 trucks.

Her decision to obtain further education in finance was driven by a desire to expand her technical skillset through practical learning experiences that she can apply to situations that may arise in her career.

Such experiences within the MS-FIN program — like the FAR Lab — have given her the skills and knowledge to build her finance career after graduation. "This hands-on exposure has reinforced my passion for finance and given me a competitive edge as I prepare to enter the industry," says Modi.

Looking forward in her career, Modi knows that the experience she's gaining now will be beneficial whether she continues in the finance industry or pursues another entrepreneurial venture. She cites skills like financial forecasting and risk assessment as those particularly helpful for entrepreneurs in any industry.

What's next?

Modi's long-term career goal is to be an entrepreneur within the financial space, drawing on her experience and education.

"I’m passionate about creating solutions that address market gaps and contribute to economic development, particularly in industries where innovation can drive significant change," says Modi. "I aim to use the financial expertise I’ve gained at W. P. Carey to establish a business that thrives in a competitive market and has a positive, lasting impact on its community and industry."

In the more immediate future, she plans to utilize her education to continue working in the finance industry, gaining knowledge and experience in fields like corporate finance, investment banking, or venture capital.

Modi says she will definitely utilize the vast career resources available to W. P. Carey students and alumni while pursuing these goals, and she has already taken advantage of some of the resources of the W. P. Carey Career Services Center.

"The team has provided personalized guidance, helping me identify opportunities that align with my skills and interests," says Modi. "In particular, the networking events and industry-specific career fairs have been invaluable in connecting me with potential employers and professionals from top organizations."

To anyone who is considering the MS-FIN program, she encourages them to also enjoy the opportunities and resources available, both in and out of the classroom.

"W. P. Carey offers a rigorous curriculum that will push you, but it’s also designed to equip you with the skills you need to succeed in the real world. Take advantage of every opportunity, whether it's networking events, career fairs, or student organizations. These experiences are just as valuable as your academic ones and will help you build relationships that last long after you graduate."
