As a recent college graduate in the U.K. and newcomer to the world of finance, Samuel Bowker (MS-FIN '25) felt he needed more skills to reach his desired career. ASU’s MS-FIN program ensures graduates are ready for a variety of paths within the finance industry, leveraging a unique blend of theory-based coursework and practical application, along with leading-edge tools.
"It was important that my studies complement my practical experience," Bowker says. "Seeking a new opportunity abroad, a friend recommended the W. P. Carey program to me. After researching the course, I realized that it aligned perfectly with my professional aspirations and academic goals."
W. P. Carey News spoke with Bowker about his experience within the MS-FIN program and how his time at ASU has shaped his career goals.
Why W. P. Carey?

One part of the MS-FIN program that was most impactful on Bowker was the opportunity to collaborate with and have in-depth discussions on course topics with classmates and Department of Finance faculty.
"Classmates and faculty have played a large part in creating a network that promotes a positive learning environment by helping everyone achieve their goals together," Bowker says. "The constant guidance and support given have been integral to my success in the course, allowing me to grow and further my understanding."
He also appreciates the emphasis within the program's curriculum on applying theories and concepts to real-world situations, better preparing students for their post-graduation careers in the finance world.
"The most meaningful aspects of my education have been the collaborative learning environment and the numerous opportunities to apply knowledge in real-world contexts," Bowker says. "Engaging with peers from diverse backgrounds has broadened my perspective and helped me approach problems from different angles."
He adds, "This, along with practical application, has deepened my understanding of complex subjects."
Why finance?
Bowker had been working in finance in England since he graduated from the University of Kent with a bachelor's in politics. Before coming to ASU, he was working as a research analyst at an investment firm.
Pursuing the MS-FIN at W. P. Carey gave Bowker a more formal, specialized education in finance, complementing his previous work experience. The program has equipped him with new knowledge and tools that Bowker says will greatly benefit him as he continues his finance career.
"Before the program, I relied more on strategic thinking and intuition developed from my experience," he says. "However, the course has taught me how to blend that with in-depth analysis and modelling."
"This balance has enhanced my ability to tackle complex challenges, and by integrating these two perspectives, I’ve been enabled to make more informed, strategic decisions."
What's next?

A benefit of W. P. Carey that did not go unnoticed by Bowker is the school's emphasis on connections and personal relationships within the world of business. Students are encouraged to get to know one another outside of the classroom and form bonds that will last even after graduation.
"Beyond academics, the network I have built has been invaluable, enhancing my growth both professionally and personally," he says.
That personal touch that W. P. Carey is known for has influenced Bowker's future career plans as well. "Looking ahead, I’ve realised that what I hope to accomplish in my career is to blend a team-oriented, relationship-driven approach with the opportunity to work on projects I’m passionate about," he says.
W. P. Carey also teaches its students to "do good while doing well," ensuring their business decisions are made mindfully, with the betterment of the community and the world at the center. This is another piece of the school that Bowker will carry with him throughout his career.
"After my work as a research analyst in London, I’m eager to collaborate with fund managers focused on socially responsible investing," he says. "The idea that my work can contribute to improving lives globally is a core motivation."
