Location, location, location ... doesn't matter! Online MSIM
The dearth of jobs in the recovering economy is a national issue this year, yet the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that there will be 1.4 million IT job openings by 2018. That fact made the announcement of the new Online MSIM program big news in the Arizona Republic recently. A story by reporter John Yantis quotes department Chairman Michael Goul: "We work with top employers all the time, and they are telling us they want people with an excellent understanding of both IT and business as a whole." He went on to explain that the 16-month Online MSIM degree "is designed to give professionals in any career field a well-rounded education in information technology so they can explain how to apply that knowledge to their companies overall." Graduates of the existing evening MSIM program on campus are frequently promoted even before they graduate. The Online MSIM means that professionals who do not live in the Phoenix metro area can reap the same benefits — an important point, since the W. P. Carey School is one of the few top-ranked business schools to offer this kind of advanced IT degree.
Top of the food chain: Information systems students prepare to be technology managers
Enrollment in the undergraduate information systems major has grown 20 percent since 2008, but the job market for IT managers is still starved for candidates. Professor Raghu Santanam recently appeared on "Horizon," a public affairs program hosted by Ted Simons that airs on Eight (KAET), the Phoenix public television station. Despite the 20 percent increase, the department is still actively recruiting more, he said. Students are attracted to the high starting salaries claimed by recent graduates. They have experienced the ubiquity of technology throughout their lives and want to learn how to manage it. And that's the key take-away, Santanam explained: information systems students are business majors — they learn all of the business basics — but they also understand how emerging technologies transform business. At graduation they're ready to move toward spots — at the top of the food chain — in their companies he said.
