Know Your Worth
With just a few weeks of class remaining, it seems like most first-year students have a touch of summer fever and are excited to get their internships underway. In the past, many W. P. Carey interns have received offers at the end of the internship and so the Graduate Career Center (GCC) is now working to get everyone fluent in the intricacies of negotiating and accepting a full-time offer.
The GCC is helping students avoid potential pitfalls such as over-negotiating, how to answer the dreaded “what are you looking for in a salary” question, and why it may be better to accept sooner rather than later. They're also teaching all first-years how to properly use leverage, make a counter-proposal and how to weigh the pros and cons of multiple offers.
One of the best things they’ve done is dispel the myth that you should always negotiate for a better offer and the employer is expecting you to do so. In the end, it’s about knowing your value and finding the right fit. It’s much more important to find a position with great growth potential than one with a high starting salary.
I have heard stories from several second year MBA students that the GCC was critical in helping them secure a solid package. They are a support arm that is available all summer and also post-graduation. It all seems like common sense, but it takes a lot of skill and forethought to negotiate an offer and it’s so nice having experts on hand to make sure you don’t drop the ball.
We hear a lot about the GCC before we get to campus, but the reality is even better than the perception. They're not only really dedicated to the students, but they also have a lot of valuable insight that helps us while we're working towards our internships and when the time comes to find a great full-time position.
