Business students gain valuable experience working on campus

A lot of students, Trevor Thompson included, enter college with little to no job experience. He discusses what it's like working on campus, and why W. P. Carey students can expect to gain should they follow suit.

A lot of students, myself included, enter college with little to no job experience. As a first-year student, one of my main goals was to get an on-campus job as quickly as possible. I wanted a reliable source of income and a convenient workplace. I currently work as the student advertising manager at The State Press, which is ASU's official newspaper. Here are some great perks of having a job on campus.

Gain experience

Gaining actual work experience that can apply to future career opportunities is a huge part of getting a job. There are so many different on-campus jobs to choose from, so there is no shortage of chances to do so. For instance, I came in looking for a job that had to do with business and would teach me skills I could put on a resume. While working at The State Press, I have gained both marketing as well as managerial skills that have helped me further myself as an individual and a professional.

Have fun

A huge benefit of working on campus is that you get the chance to work with other students! Most jobs like these are really relaxed and allow some room for change. I luckily landed a position where I have made some of my greatest friends in college and I have a great time every day at work. I got the opportunity to meet Sparky, and I was even able to organize a barbecue with all of my coworkers.

Benefit from convenience

Having a job in college can be tough if you don't have a vehicle, which is the case for a large majority of students. Getting a job on campus instantly takes away any need for travel, since you can literally walk to any place on campus within a few minutes. This is great if you have a tight schedule of classes, extracurricular involvement, and so on.

On-campus positions are willing to work with students' schedules and are usually during normal business hours: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This means that it won't interfere with most activities you might have planned such as club meetings or events and you can usually get your weekends off.
