Tyler Lai (BS Computer Information Systems '24, MS-AIB '25) was an undergraduate student at ASU’s W. P. Carey School of Business when he found an interest in how technology and business intersect. "During that time, I discovered my passion for fields like business intelligence and data analytics, which motivated me to continue my education," he says.

As he was considering his graduate studies, the school announced the groundbreaking new Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence in Business (MS-AIB) program, and he was intrigued.

"I initially enrolled in the business analytics program, but when I learned about the new AI in business program, I knew it was the perfect fit for my goals," Lai says. "I chose W. P. Carey again because of their incredible focus on innovation. They are leading the way with forward-thinking programs like this one, which blends AI and business in a truly unique way."

W. P. Carey News spoke to Lai about the innovative curriculum of the MS-AIB program, his connections with classmates, faculty, and mentors, and his advice for future students.

Why W. P. Carey?

As an undergraduate at W. P. Carey, Lai had already experienced the hands-on learning and practical application of knowledge that the school is known for. When he decided to pursue further studies in business technology, he knew how beneficial a specialized master's degree like the MS-AIB could be for his career. His experience in the program so far has only proven this correct.

"We’ve worked on assignments that mirror actual tasks you’d encounter in roles like cybersecurity, which makes the learning feel immediately applicable," Lai says. "I also found it fascinating when professors brought in industry experts from companies like Coursera, IBM, or even Cisco to share their experiences and insights. It’s incredible how the professors leverage their connections to help us learn beyond the classroom."

Connection is a common theme within Lai's MS-AIB experience, whether with faculty members, industry experts, or his fellow students. He talks about the benefits of hearing about others' experiences and getting to know other perspectives and points of view.

"Being able to bounce ideas off colleagues has been especially valuable," Lai says. "For example, when a question is posed in class, you might hear five different answers from five different people, and together, those perspectives create the complete picture. It’s a collaborative learning environment that pushes everyone to think critically and grow."

Through the program's hands-on, experiential learning opportunities and the connections he has formed with others, Lai feels prepared for his future career.

"What has truly stood out to me is the combination of technical and soft skills I’ve developed through the program," Lai says. "The technical skills equip me to tackle real-world challenges, while soft skills like communication and teamwork are invaluable for collaborating effectively in any environment."

Why AI in business?

Lai studied computer information systems in his undergraduate program, giving him a look at how technology can help organizations meet their business goals.

This intersection of business and emerging technologies sparked a deep interest in him. When he heard about the MS-AIB — the first graduate degree in AI to be offered by a U.S. business school — he knew it was a great fit for where he wanted his career to go.

He's particularly interested in how tools like artificial intelligence can be used by organizations to find innovative solutions to their business problems, as well as how it can be used to benefit society as a whole.

"I hope to become a leader in the tech industry, particularly in the field of AI," Lai says. "Whether through entrepreneurship or working for a major company, my goal is to drive innovation and contribute to meaningful advancements in artificial intelligence and business intelligence."

What's next?

The community aspect of W. P. Carey, shown through Lai's connections with supportive faculty members and his classmates, is one of the top reasons Lai would recommend the school and the MS-AIB to anyone interested.

"I’d say it’s the community of diverse, like-minded individuals that makes [W. P. Carey] truly unique," Lai says. "Everyone here is driven by a shared passion for learning and growth, but they bring their own unique backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences to the table. This diversity creates an environment where you’re constantly exposed to new ideas and ways of thinking, which enhances every discussion and collaboration."

He recommends new students to take advantage of opportunities to form such connections through networking events and reaching out to professors. "Network with your peers, build meaningful friendships, and connect with your professors; they’re not just here to teach but to support and guide you," Lai says. "The community here is incredibly supportive."

Lai adds, "Most importantly, soak in every moment. The experience goes by quickly, so make the effort to learn, grow, and enjoy the journey while you’re here."
