Best home insurance
An ASU finance expert weighs in on common mistakes and tips for finding the best home insurance.
In this story published Aug. 26, 2025, on WalletHub:
Shop around and look beyond just price. The lowest cost might be the best, but the key is to work with a company who will actually pay claims when you suffer a loss (otherwise, what is the insurance for?). Some companies may offer a lower premium initially, but if you make a claim, they might raise the premium substantially, so get information on this if you can. You can find good carriers online if you prefer to work that way, and you can also go through agents if you want to work with an individual to get your coverages. When working with agents, remember that some represent only one company and others may represent many companies (independent agents). In any case, it is best to gather a few quotes, as there can be significant differences in premiums. In the current environment, homeowners insurance costs have been rising rapidly in many areas, so also inquire regarding the company's track record raising premiums. If you have items like a security system or fire sprinklers, see if the insurer offers discounts.
