Co-working spaces can boost your creativity

We are living in an age of mobile offices and people working religiously from coffee shops. It can be a way of life for many entrepreneurs. However, because this has become such a trend, co-working spaces are popping up in cities all over the world, and the Phoenix area is no exception. These spaces provide a brilliant solution for both real estate owners and single or small teams of business owners.

Question: I have a very small team, so we do not have an office, but I don't love working out of Starbucks or my kitchen all of the time. What affordable and smart options do I have?

Answer: We are living in an age of mobile offices and people working religiously from coffee shops. It can be a way of life for many entrepreneurs. However, because this has become such a trend, co-working spaces are popping up in cities all over the world, and the Phoenix-area is no exception. These spaces provide a brilliant solution for both real estate owners and single or small teams of business owners.

There are a few different models, but most co-working spaces offer various levels of space (a seat at a table, a desk, an office) with traditional office needs (Wi-Fi, printing, coffee, conference space) and the value of purposefully coming to work with people who are also working to accomplish significant things. If you add up all the money you won't be spending on lattes and snacks while working in a coffee shop, the fee to become a member at one of these great co-working spaces is quite affordable.

Where can you co-work in Arizona? Below, you will find a sampling of locations, and you can explore more online. Each co-working facility has its own menu of features and perks. Some are geared more toward specific types of businesses or lifestyles, so explore and visit to find the right spot for you to be the most productive and effective business owner.

Chandler: Gangplank has been an important part of downtown Chandler since 2008, and it remains one of the most welcoming co-working spaces around. Gangplank employs a pay-it-forward model, allowing founders and creators to use space and resources for free, as long as they contribute to the community by sharing their skills, ideas and experience. Gilbert: EZ Spaces, a co-working office space at Williams Field Road and Val Vista Drive, offers memberships ranging from $200 to $400 per month. This facility offers a robust list of resources and perks. Website: EZspaces.com

Phoenix: The Office Pile is located south of Seventh Street and Thomas Road in Phoenix. It offers a collaborative, community-focused culture for working and making progress on ventures and in life. Membership fees range from $15 to $595. Website: Theofficepile.com

Scottsdale: Elevate Coworking is in the Paradise Valley Mall. It offers standard memberships ranging from $19 to $79 per month, as well as customized memberships based on additional needs or support. This space, like several others, also hosts many events open to the public. Website: Elevatecoworking.com

Tempe: Desarrollo, a tech center and incubator, recently launched on Mill Avenue within walking distance of ASU's Tempe campus and the light rail system. This space, focused on technology ventures, offers memberships ranging from $30 to $250, with additional customized options, featuring executive space and services for additional fees. The facility has a free drop-in day for anyone who wants to check it out. Website: Desarrollode.org

All of these spaces, and many others, are creating environments to encourage collaboration, creativity and community culture. If you are considering venturing outside your home office or local coffee shop, I encourage you to make some visits and see the impact that a collaborative workspace can have on your progress — and your attitude!
