This year is off to a successful start. I am delighted to report that our undergraduate Computer Information Systems program ranked No. 17 in the latest rankings of the U.S. News & World Report, moving us up by one place this year. ASU also continues to be ranked the No. 1 innovative university in the nation.
While the rankings don’t lie, the ultimate test of our efforts is student career outcomes. As such, we keep our focus on how we train students to have a life-long learning orientation in the digital world. Creativity, innovation, and a focus on excellence are values that we instill in our students from day one. We are making great progress in implementing our new undergraduate CIS curriculum.
One of the new initiatives that we have begun testing out in a very small way is creating longer-term, part-time job opportunities for undergraduate students that integrate coursework with real-world experience in a meaningful way. This requires collaborating closely with employers and monitoring for meaningful student experiences throughout their internships. In essence, this is a new “teaching hospital model” in the business school environment. We are also testing out other experiential learning initiatives.
Speaking of experiential learning, this is the time of the year when our faculty are preparing to round up capstone and applied project opportunities for students at both master's and undergraduate levels. If your organization is interested in working with student groups of our brightest learners over the spring semester, please do not hesitate to contact me and my staff. We will ensure that we direct you to the right faculty member based on your project needs.
